The growing number of smartphones that now come equipped with cameras ranging from 5 to 8 megapixels is certainly changing the way we take pictures. Most now can take pictures as good as those taken by traditional point-and-shoots, and are instantly ready to be viewed, edited and shared across the web.

Apple's iPhone 4S comes with a high performance 5-lens 8 megapixel camera that can snap a picture in under 2 seconds upon startup, and doubles as a 1080p HD video recorder. With performance like that, and with up to 64 gigabytes of available storage, why not use your iPhone's camera for everyday shooting?

Before iOS 5, one reason not use your handy-dandy iPhone as your primary camera was due to the lack of a physical button that activated the camera's shutter. Instead, pictures could only be taken by pressing on a virtual button that appeared on the screen. Many users found this technique rather cumbersome. Pressing on the screen does not give the detailed feedback that a physical button does when taking a picture, many times resulting in blurrier images and/or the picture ending up not being taken at all (let's not forget it being nearly impossible to take good pictures of yourself using the higher quality, flash-ready rear-facing camera).

Volume-up button on your iPhone

Fortunately, Apple updated its mobile operating system so that users can now use the volume-up button located on the side of their iOS 5 devices. This allows for a steadier grip, full view of the screen, and easier execution in snapping pictures with an iPhone.

Volume up button on your headset

If that wasn't handy enough, iOS 5 iPhone users can also now take pictures by using the volume-up button on a connected headset, leading to virtually no physical interaction in snapping pictures with the phone other than simply holding it with one hand. Now we can all take those fabulous pictures of ourselves while wearing those stylishly cool white earbuds! Go ahead, try it!
